2nd Grade Curriculum
While the information below is not exclusive, it covers the big ideas, skills and concepts of the 2nd Grade Curriculum.
Also included are opportunities Glencoe 2nd Graders will have this year.
Reading
All students focus on the 5 pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Students will be diving into units on story structure, characters, informational text, theme and main idea. A balance of both fiction and nonfiction is a big part of intermediate grades. This year, Scholastic News magazine will help us to increase access to nonfiction.
Writing
Students are asked to move through the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing) by writing narrative stories, opinion pieces, and informational essays. Students are expected to research within each genre.
Math
There are many concepts covered over the year, but there are few large concepts emphasized in 2nd grade. Students will focus on patterns and skip counting which then supports counting coins and telling time. Students are asked understand place value, add and subtract within 1000. They will also explore 2D and 3D shapes, length and area. As in all grades, students are expected to clearly show mathematical thinking and demonstrate specific mathematical behaviors.
Science
Students will focus on animal biodiversity, plant adaptations, Earth's surfaces and landforms and engineering. We will be using an online resource called Mystery Science to support our alignment with the current science standards.
Social Studies
Students will study neighborhoods, civics and mapping.
Technology
Students have use of Chromebooks and Google accounts at school. More information will go home after our September roll out.
Specials
Students take part in all of the following specials on a weekly basis:
PE (Tuesday and Friday), Library (Thursday) and Music (Monday and Wednesday)
Art Infusion
Art Infusion trained parent-teams teach a 6 art history-based lesson throughout the year.
Art Residencies
Second grade teachers are still working on the residency experience for this year. When it is scheduled, it will be in the monthly newsletter.
Homework
There will not be assigned weekly homework, but our hope is that students read daily.
Common Core ELA and Math Standards for each grade level can be found at http://www.ode.state.or.us/teachlearn/real/standards/.
